Inclusive Sport Formats

What are Inclusive Sport Formats?

The School Games Inclusive sport formats have been created to enable Special Education Needs/disabled (SEND) and non-SEND pupils from mainstream schools to compete against each other.

These format cards have been designed in conjuction with 13 National Governing Bodies (NGBs) of sport (Archery GB, Badminton England, Canoe England, England & Wales Cricket Board, British Fencing, The Golf Foundation, England Hockey, British Rowing, Royal Yachting Association, Table Tennis England, Tennis Foundation, Volleyball England and Unified Basketball / Football) and 18 Project Ability schools (in partnership with 12 additional mainstream schools).

Further Resources

Additionally, these bodies have provided a free-to-download matrix available to all School Games website users. This can be used as a guide to help LOC areas view what support may be available to support them in terms of appropriate exit routes for young people.

Please note that if an area is red it does not mean that delivery in a sport can not take place, and conversations with local community clubs are strongly encouraged.

You can download the NGB Sports Format Matrix by clicking here to see what's on offer in your area.

Each format is based around the current School Games version of the sport housed on site. However a number of changes have been made to the rules to enable a wider range of pupils to participate. We also provide a downloadable overview card for all the information you need to get started. Click here to download it.

Inclusive Competition

At all levels of the School Games there will be increased opportunities for young people with disabilities to compete on a local, regional and national level. Our aim is simply to provide more opportunities.

Project Ability

To further ensure that competitions within the School Games are as inclusive as possible, a bespoke project has been designed to help drive and increase opportunities for young disabled people.
